The first time
Today was the day. We experienced a first time and it made me laugh terribly. It was probably not at all educational but it was so unexpected. I tried to hold back my laughter but there was really nothing I could do about it. The first time was just so incredibly funny.
The first time
..That our toddler shouted angrily; “Daddy and mommy, you are stupid”.
He had had a busy afternoon at playschool and came home exuberant. A few weeks ago he was completely demolished after an afternoon of playing, but not anymore. Our little man comes back from playschool with energy for ten. Action had to be taken immediately. There really was no time to have a drink and relax. No, mama had to play right along. I managed to persuade him to tinker quietly but this was of short duration. The crate of Toet Toet Cars’s soon had to go downstairs. Within minutes the play area was littered with train parts and roads. All no problem as long as he plays sweetly with it. Playing he did, that was not the problem. However, the little man had his volume knob turned all the way up. The cries and screams flew around my ears. My hearing was barely damaged. Our little lady was sleeping unsuspectingly in the sling but even she looked up from time to time from the noise. I had already tried 385 times to make him play more quietly. I tried to convince him that playing is just as much fun when you're not screaming so loudly. He either did not agree or just had poop in his ears. Personally, I think the latter. Even warning did not lower the volume. Such a shame.
While I was considering putting in earplugs, the husband came downstairs. He also tried to get the toddler to stop screaming and shouting out primal cries. Since this also had little effect I became angry. Then it happened. Mister sat down on the floor and shouted; “Daddy and mummy, you are stupid!” To emphasize his expression of dissatisfaction he also sang a song about it. “mommy and daddy are stohoommm!”
At first I was ringing my ears. Because this was the first time he said something like that. Then I just had to laugh really hard. I did try to do this with my back to little man but I'm afraid he figured it out. Nice and educational, huh?! Well, I expect this won't be the last time either. So I'd better laugh about it then. Next time I will be prepared. First I thought of a witty reply.
By the way, after dinner he went back to making noise again. I haven't found the golden solution yet. Hopefully the volume knob will be turned down a bit today.
Do your toddlers ever say something ‘ugly’ to you?? Then how do you respond?
